Biography

Pekka Haavisto, is an MP in Finland, President of European Institute of Peace, former President candidate in Finland and now running for 2018 as well, European Union Special Representative in Sudan and Darfur and as a Special Advisor for the UN in Darfur peace process. He has also led several missions to conflict areas as the Chairman of UNEP’s post-conflict work in 1999-2005. 2014 he was the Foreign Minister’s Special Representative for African Crises.

Pekka Haavisto was the first Green Minister of Environment and Development in Europe and he has been Chairperson of the Finnish Greens 1993-1995 and of European Green Party 2003-2006. He was a presidential candidate in 2012, running against Mr. Sauli Niinistö, who eventually won the election, in the second round of voting.
